Day of the toast

Status: 28.02.24

Gluten Tag together! Every last Thursday in February there is a curious holiday, this time from England: Toast Day! And as toast is also very popular here, we want to celebrate the crispy pastry. Bread was already being toasted in the Middle Ages. However, toast as we know it today only appeared on our plates much later. In Germany, it didn't really catch on until the 1950s.

Did you know that the first toaster was invented in 1909? In the USA, the General Electric company launched it on the market. Around the same time, the bread toaster came onto the market in Germany. However, the pop-up toaster that we know today only became widespread here after the Second World War.

Crispy, creamy, savoury & sweet

Toast is available as classic white bread, as a wholemeal version, made from rye or sourdough. It can be topped with savoury toppings for breakfast, spread with jam or transformed into a dessert with a sweet cream and fruit. The inconspicuous slice of bread is therefore extremely versatile and appeals to most tastes.

What you probably didn't know about toast

The largest mosaic: In 2011, the volunteer fire brigades from Garching, Hochbrück and Gernlinden laid the largest toast mosaic in Germany. It covered an area of 150 m², was over 10 metres wide and over 14 metres long. Albert Einstein was chosen as the motif.

The highest flight: In 2012, Matthew Lucci designed a pop-up toaster that catapulted the slice of bread up to 4.57 metres into the air after toasting.

Fast eater : The world record for eating a slice of toast quickly is currently 7.112 seconds and was set in 2019.
