Questions and answers about the eezy.nrw tariff
Everything else you need to know about contactless travel and automatic price calculation with eezy.
Buying tickets is child's play in three steps using the check-in/check-out principle:
1. before you get on the bus or train, you check in via the app. When you check in, you can book additional people (adults/children) and bicycles and select 1st class.
2 After checking in, the app will show you your digital ticket (travel authorisation).
3. when you have finished your journey, you check out again via the app.
The distance travelled between the start and destination stops is automatically recorded in the app. The correct price is then calculated and debited.
A one-off registration in your transport company's ticket shop is generally required before purchasing your first ticket.
During the entire journey, your smartphone must be ready for use, the location services activated and the mobile internet switched on (do not activate flight or offline mode!). In addition, the display must be able to show your digital ticket (travel authorisation) in full in the event of an inspection.
The app must remain open at all times during the journey, but can run in the background. A journey is always ended automatically if you...
- close or uninstall the app on your smartphone,
- switch off the location function or mobile internet usage on your smartphone,
- leave the area of validity of the eTarife (generally NRW with some exceptions) or
- you have not logged out after 24 hours or have stopped travelling on public transport.
If you make one or more changes, you only need to remain checked in in the app so that the route can continue to be calculated. You only check out at the end of your journey when you have reached your destination. The price calculation is based solely on the distance as the crow flies between the start and destination stops and is independent of possible changes and the duration of the journey.
If your device's location detection is activated and you are no longer in a public transport vehicle, the app will first ask if you would like to be checked out. A message appears again after 30 minutes. You will only be automatically checked out after 24 hours and the journey tracked up to this point will be charged. In this case, you may need to contact the support team of your contracted transport company for a recalculation.
After checking in, you will receive a digital ticket (travel authorisation) in the app with information in text form and a QR code. The QR code must be shown on the display of the smartphone during a ticket inspection so that the inspection staff can scan it. If requested, you must also be able to present an official photo ID (driving licence, ID card or passport), as the ticket will be issued in person.
It is important that the check-in process is completed when you board the bus or train. If you only check in in the vehicle, you will be travelling without a valid ticket until then. In the event of a ticket inspection, you will then have to pay a fine, i.e. an increased transport charge (EBE).

The price is then made up of the one-off eezy.nrw basic price of 1.74 euros and the sum of the regional labour prices of the respective fare zones travelled through (see "Price levels"). For the calculation of the labour price, the total airline route between the start and destination is broken down at the fare zone boundary. The counting of the linear kilometres then starts at zero at the fare zone boundary. The number of kilometres started on the straight-line section is rounded up or down.
An example: When travelling from Hamm to Cologne, the straight-line distance crosses the areas of the WestfalenTarif (WT), the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS). The price is then calculated as follows: Basic price eezy.nrw + working prices WestfalenTarif, VRR and VRS.
When travelling with eezy NRW (in the VRR), there is a built-in cost protection that prevents you from paying more with eezy NRW (in the VRR) than for the normal VRR fare. This limit on the fare is known as the price cap.
This means that with eezy NRW you do not pay more per journey in the VRR than the comparable single ticket costs in the respective price level. As the eezy fare includes a one-off basic price as well as a charge for the linear kilometres travelled, you can travel cheaper on many routes than with a single ticket.
Within 24 hours, the fare (in 2nd class) with eezy NRW (in the VRR) is limited to 25 euros.
The 24-hour period can be selected individually, i.e. it begins with the first check-in and ends exactly 24 hours later.
All eTariffs (network and NRW eTariff) have a cost limit for a 24-hour period. For eezy NRW (in VRR), the total price for the sum of all journeys is limited to 25 euros for this period (based on a journey with eezy NRW (in VRR) in 2nd class without passenger or bicycle transport). If one of the journeys is not completed within the 24-hour period, it counts as the first journey of a new 24-hour period.
In this case, the linear kilometres outside NRW are divided up in proportion to the linear kilometres of the tariff zones in NRW.
An example: For a journey of 100 linear kilometres from the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV) through the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) to the WestfalenTarif (WT) area, 50 kilometres lie outside NRW. The calculation then looks like this:
- Measured linear kilometres: 15 km in the AVV, 30 km in the VRS, 50 km outside NRW, 5 km in the WT
- Distributed linear kilometres: 30 km in the AVV, 60 km in the VRS, 10 km in the WT
It is not possible to check in outside the area of validity, which is why the eTariff cannot be used in this case. If a journey goes beyond the boundary of the area of validity, the passenger is automatically checked out. The last stop still included in the area of validity is then used as the destination for pricing. A separate ticket must be purchased for the remaining journey outside the eTariff area of validity.
The maximum journey time with eezy is 420 minutes. The basic fare for eezy NRW (in the VRR) is valid for the entire journey.
In some fare zones (e.g. eezy Westfalen) there is a maximum validity of the basic fare that differs from the maximum journey duration, e.g. 90 minutes. If this is exceeded, the basic fare will be charged several times at check-out. Example: For a journey of 120 minutes and a basic fare validity of 90 minutes each, the basic fare is charged twice.
An automatic check-out does not take place if the validity of the basic fare is exceeded.
Children travel 50 per cent cheaper than adults. The period of validity of the ticket is linked to the 24-hour period of the person making the booking.
Please refer to our price table.
A flat-rate surcharge is levied for 24 hours for the carriage of bicycles. The validity period is linked to the 24-hour period of the person making the booking.
Please refer to our price table.
When using 1st class, the price per journey increases by 50 per cent. This also applies to the upper price limit if a journey with an additional 1st class booking is made within 24 hours. The price also increases by 50 per cent for passengers travelling in 1st class.
Please refer to our price table.
The location services must remain switched on for the correct calculation of the fare after the journey. If you want to buy tickets at the classic fare or only need timetable information, the location services do not necessarily have to be switched on. However, the suggestions in the stop search in the journey planner are tailored to your current location and are then displayed more quickly.
As long as you are in the vehicle and driving or the Bluetooth transmitter, if present, is still within range of your smartphone, you will remain checked in. If you are no longer travelling in a vehicle, the app itself will ask you to check out. The app will only check you out automatically after a set time interval of 24 hours. You will then have to check in again manually for a new journey. There is no automatic billing for a new journey.
