Nationwide Soup Day
Status: 17.11.23
Every year on 19 November, Germany celebrates Soup Day. Never heard of it? That's not surprising. Although this day clearly originated in Germany, little is known about its origins.
However, more is known about the origins of the soup.
Soup Day is an annual day of action organised by food banks in parts of Germany to raise money for charity.
The history of soup
The known origins of soup date back to the Stone Age, although it is very different from the varieties we know today. Back then, it was probably prepared in waterproof cooking bags and was more reminiscent of a porridge.
Soups similar to what we know today were probably first cooked in Mesopotamia around 6,000 years ago. From there, they spread to Egypt, Greece and finally to the Roman Empire.
During the Renaissance, the soup was further refined and developed over time into what we know today.

Preparation
Peel the soup vegetables and potatoes and cut into small cubes. Peel the onions and cut into small pieces too.
Heat the oil in a pan and sauté the onions, potatoes and vegetables briefly. Then add the pearl barley and sauté.
Pour in the vegetable stock and leave to simmer for about 30 minutes. Then season the soup to taste. Enjoy your meal!
