International Geocaching Day

Status: 16.08.23

International Geocaching Day takes place every year on the 3rd Saturday in August. In 2023, the day will therefore take place on 19 August. Many people probably already know what geocaching is, but perhaps some have never heard of this hobby.

What is geocaching?

Did you also organise scavenger hunts as children and try to find a secret hiding place together? Geocaching works on a similar principle. The aim is to find a "cache" with the help of GPS coordinates.

Sometimes these coordinates are hidden behind puzzles and tasks that you have to solve first. But even if you have the coordinates for the hiding place, it is still a challenge to find it. The caches are usually very well hidden.

How did the International Geocaching Day come about?

Geocaching has been growing in popularity for many years. The international day of geocaching goes back to the Seattle-based company Groundspeak Inc. Anyone who enjoys looking for caches themselves will certainly be familiar with the geocaching.com website. The platform was launched in 2000 and is a central point of contact for anyone who wants to try their hand at GPS scavenger hunts.

The popularity is so great that International Geocaching Day has even been recognised as an official public holiday in Seattle since 2013.
