What's the first thing you think of when you think of the Ruhr region? Coal and steel or the traffic jam on the B1 motorway?

You can still find traces of the old coal heart everywhere in the region. Discover Dortmund's coal and steel history with DOmove.

On tour with the U44

Traffic jams? No problem, because with the city railway we don't have to worry about that.

We take the U44 directly to the Dortmunder U. Hardly any other building symbolises the city's structural change better. Until the 1990s, the Dortmunder U served as a fermentation and storage cellar for the Union brewery.

Today, the Ostwall Museum, Hartware MedienKunstVerein, UZWEI Kulturelle Bildung, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and Dortmund University of Technology all co-operate under the golden U.

Museum of Art and Cultural History

We can easily reach another cultural highlight with the U44 underground line. If you are interested in history from antiquity to modern times, the museum is definitely worth a visit.

It is the oldest museum of its kind in the Ruhr region and is located in the centre of a historic building.

Westfalenhütte

The U44 takes us to the next place of interest. With its iron and steelworks, Hoesch was one of the largest employers in the region for a long time. This is why the north-east of Dortmund has a long tradition as a centre of heavy industry. Here you will find the Hoesch Museum.

Incidentally, the steelworks was sold to China after it was abandoned, shipped over there in 4,000 containers and rebuilt.
