The new city bus routes 400 and 401

Fast. Direct. Connected city-wide.

From Monday, 27 October, the new city bus routes 400 and 401 will bring fresh impetus to Dortmund's city centre. With 10-minute intervals in the core section, direct cross-connections and better connections at the main station, changing buses will be easier, journeys will be shorter and travelling through Dortmund will be even more comfortable. New direct connections between the city districts and the expansion of barrier-free stops are gradually developing the bus network further.

More connections, more frequent service, better accessibility

The new line 400 runs every 20 minutes between Märkischer Straße, Heiliger Weg and Stadthaus. From there, the buses continue to Hörde every 20 minutes.

Line 401 starts at Saarlandstraße or Stadthaus, runs in an arc through the Kronprinzenviertel and closes the gap to Funkenburg. It runs every 20 minutes throughout.

Adjustments to the bus network

  • Line 412: will in future run via Leopoldstraße and thus connect directly to the 400.

Part of Dortmund mobil

More speed. More comfort. More future.

With the introduction of the new line 400, DSW21 is taking another important step as part of the future programme Dortmund mobile future programme. The aim is to make local public transport in Dortmund noticeably more attractive, more reliable and more efficient - for everyone who is on the move every day. Dortmund mobil comprises several components that complement each other perfectly:

  • CityTaktPlus: With more frequent services in the light rail area - for example 5-minute journeys between the main railway station and the harbour - a service is created that significantly speeds up and expands light rail transport.

  • DOnight: Stay mobile at night - with an improved night service that has been gradually expanded since 2024

  • New city centre lines: Line 400 and the complementary line 401 will create new cross-connections in the heart of the city.

For passengers, this means shorter waiting times, better connections and a convenient alternative to the car. At the same time, DSW21 is investing millions in vehicles, infrastructure and personnel in order to make local transport in Dortmund future-proof and climate-friendly. In this way, Dortmund mobil is becoming the engine of modern, sustainable mobility in our city - and the new line 400 is visible proof of this.

Everything you need to know about the new lines 400 and 401 at a glance

The new line is intended to be the link between the light rail and S-Bahn axes and connect regional and long-distance transport. The service will be a strong alternative for commuters in particular.

Start is 27 October2025

The line runs in a ring service every 20 minutes. Sections to Hörde and Märkische Straße are also integrated into the concept, also every 20 minutes. Between Stadthaus, Kreuzstraße, the main railway station, Borsigplatz and Funkenburg, the services overlap to form a uniform 10-minute interval.

The subdivision is primarily intended to help our customers:

  • Journeys on route 400 with destination "Stadthaus" travel the ring in an anti-clockwise direction. At "Stadthaus" they change to route number 401 and continue to "Funkenburg".
  • Journeys on route 400 with destination "Funkenburg" travel clockwise along the ring. In addition, the sign "Ringverkehr" is displayed on the buses - so it is clearly recognisable that no change is necessary.
  • The existing line 452 between "HBF" and "Lenteninsel" will be replaced by the ring lines.
  • In future, the new line 453 will run directly from Schüren via the Kaiserviertel district to the main railway station. Many destinations will remain accessible - often even more directly or more frequently.
  • Lines 455 (Dortmund Hbf - Hörde) and 456 (Dortmund Hbf - Schüren) will be completely cancelled and replaced by the new line 400.
  • Lines 412 and 451 will be adapted to provide a better connection to the new 400.

Some of the direct connections will change. Although part of route 452 will be cancelled:

  • Line 401 will continue to connect the neighbourhood every 20 minutes in a circular service.
  • The new line 453 provides a direct connection to the main railway station.
  • The bus connections to the light rail every 10 minutes will be retained.

Until the start after the autumn holidays:

  • New bus stops will be installed (temporary/barrier-free)
  • Bus lanes and cycle lanes marked
