Travelling safely: Women's night taxis start in Dortmund

A joint pilot project between the City of Dortmund, DSW21 and Taxi Dortmund eG is being launched today to improve safety and mobility in the late hours: the new Women's Night Taxi, a voucher model to support women on their way home at night.

The last section of the journey in particular - from the bus stop to the front door - often lacks safe and convenient mobility solutions. This is precisely where the Women's Night Taxi comes in: A voucher system is used to support journeys in taxis that are specially authorised for this project. Women receive a voucher worth 8 euros per journey, which can be redeemed directly with the driver.

The vouchers are available at the DSW21 customer centres at Petrikirche and in Hörde. A maximum of six vouchers can be issued per pick-up - a valid proof of age is sufficient, a public transport ticket is not required.

The Women's Night Taxi can be used daily between 10.00 pm and 6.00 am. The journey must start in the Dortmund city area, the destination may also be outside. Bookings can be made by calling the taxi number 0231 144444. Important: It must be stated at the time of booking that the journey is part of the Women's Night Taxi programme. Only vehicles with the "Plus Taxi" quality seal of Taxi Dortmund eG - recognisable by the sticker on the rear and a notice in the vehicle - are recognised.

With this project, the city and partners not only want to improve the feeling of safety, but also set an example for more participation and equality. This is because women in particular often experience insecurity or even assault in public spaces - especially at night. The new programme aims to counteract this and make it easier for women to walk home at night.

The project will initially run until 30 November 2026 or while stocks of 18,750 vouchers last. An evaluation will show how the offer is received - and whether it can be continued beyond that.
