Major roadworks in Eving: closures, diversions and replacement traffic from 1 September

From the beginning of September, DSW21 and DEW21 will be combining two construction projects on Evinger Straße: while tracks are being laid for the future district heating line, DSW21 is renewing two points on the U41 underground line. The road will be closed at two points until 19 September - with diversions for traffic and rail replacement services on three days.

All details at a glance

District heating work
In the area north of the Evinger Straße/Dammstraße/Lütge Heidestraße junction, DEW21 is carrying out work to lay a new district heating route. A district heating crossing is being built underneath the railway tracks: DSW21 is completely removing the tracks over a length of around 6 metres so that DEW21 can install two district heating pipes in a trench underneath. Once the work is complete, the trench will be closed and the tracks reinstalled.

The two companies have already successfully carried out a similar procedure at several locations in Dortmund - for example at the Funkenburg junction in the east of the city centre, where DEW21 laid new district heating pipes and DSW21 renewed the light rail tracks at the same time.

By expanding the district heating infrastructure, DEW21 is making an important contribution to Dortmund's energy transition. The measure in Eving is part of a comprehensive expansion of the district heating network with which DEW21 is driving forward the decarbonisation of the heat supply in Dortmund. The aim is to replace fossil fuels in the long term and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions - for a sustainable Dortmund that is worth living in. The new district heating system is already saving more than 45,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, and the planned expansion is expected to reduce this figure to over 60,000 tonnes per year in future.

Track work
DSW21 is renewing two points and around 20 metres of track between the "Externberg" and "Grävingholz" stops. Minor repair work is also being carried out on the tracks. The municipal public transport company is investing around €500,000 in the infrastructure of the U41 line at this point. The project is being funded by the state of NRW via the "Municipal Rail" programme.

Light rail and rail replacement services
Apart from the period from 7 to 9 September, the two construction measures will not affect light rail services. During these three days, however, the light rail line U41 will be replaced by a rail replacement service with buses between the "Fredenbaum" and "Brambauer Verkehrshof" stops. This service will run every 10 minutes during peak times and every 15 minutes at other times. On the remaining section of the line ("Fredenbaum" - "Clarenberg"), the U41 light rail line will continue to run regularly.

The U41 rail replacement service usually stops at replacement stops in the immediate vicinity of the regular light rail stops - often the night express stops of the same name are also served. There are exceptions to this in some places, which can be seen in the attached sketch.

  • The stops "Güterstraße", "Zeche Minister Stein", "Amtsstraße" and "Externberg" will be cancelled in both directions without replacement.

DSW21 recommends that passengers allow more travelling time than usual for their journey on the rail replacement service.

Information for passengers with reduced mobility

Barrier-free boarding and alighting from the rail replacement service is possible at the "Brambauer Vekehrshof" and "Fredenbaum" stops. Otherwise, a special vehicle is available on request for passengers with reduced mobility, especially those with an electric wheelchair. Affected passengers can contact DSW21 staff directly for assistance.

Bus services / night express
During the entire construction period, the night express lines NE1, NE2 and NE22 will have to be widely rerouted. The stops "Zeche Minister Stein" and "Forsthausstraße" will be cancelled without replacement. DSW21 will set up replacement stops for the "Güterstraße", "Eving Gewerbepark" and "Grävingholz" stops.

Individual traffic
From 1 to 19 September, Evinger Straße will be completely closed in two areas: firstly, north of the Evinger Straße/Dammstraße/Lütge Heidestraße junction over a length of around 100 metres. Secondly, south of the Evinger Straße/Grävingholzstraße/Kemminghauser Straße junction on a section of around 70 metres. Between these two construction measures, Evinger Straße will remain open to traffic without restriction from the Burger King restaurant to the Forsthausstraße entrance. Residents can continue to drive north of the aforementioned entrance in the direction of the construction site (see also sketch).

A wide diversion will be set up during the closure period:

  • Dammstraße - Burgholzstraße - Osterfeldstraße - Lüdinghauser Straße - Kemminghauser Straße

The area of Evinger Straße between the two construction sites is connected to the aforementioned diversion route via Deutsche Straße.

Information for local residents
In order to minimise disruption for local residents and complete the work quickly, some of the work will also be carried out at night. This work will always be carried out within the framework of official authorisations. Residents will be informed in writing in good time about the construction work and the associated restrictions. In addition, access to the houses and buildings will be ensured during the construction period.
