First conversion phase at the "Stadtgarten" stop successfully completed

Improved fire protection thanks to glass smoke barriers - now fewer restrictions for passengers - DSW21 invests €1.6 million in fire protection.

DSW21 has successfully completed the first construction phase of the remodelling of the busy "Stadtgarten" light rail stop: On "Level -2" (light rail lines U42 and U46), glass smoke barriers have been installed on the stairs/escalators to "Level -1" (light rail lines U41, U45, U47 and U49). In the event of a fire, they prevent smoke from spreading rapidly through the station.

The second construction phase on "Level -1" (light rail lines U41, U45, U47 and U49) will now follow seamlessly. The Dortmund public transport company is installing an open-smoke ceiling made of non-combustible materials and installing steel and glass door systems to separate the platform and stairs. Both of these measures ensure that the level will smoke more slowly in the event of a fire and that passengers will have more time to get outside.

Unlike the first construction phase, the current measure does not cause any major detours for passengers at the station. Only parts of the platforms concerned will be closed, so that there is temporarily less space available.

DSW21 is investing a total of 1.6 million euros in fire protection for passengers and employees at the "Stadtgarten" stop. The state of NRW is funding this through the "Municipal Rail" programme. The work is expected to be completed in spring 2026.
