In Waltrop, you can experience industrial culture up close. The Prussian eagle has been visible on the towers of the Henrichenburg ship lift for 120 years. The facility was put into operation in 1899 to enable ships to overcome a 14 metre high canal step. For over 60 years, the boat lift made the crossing possible. Today it is a popular destination for excursions.

Gasometer

The gasometer is hard to miss when you approach Oberhausen. Europe's largest disc gas holder is a reminder of the heavy industry that once shaped the Ruhr region. Today, it offers more than 7,000 square metres that are used for events. The changing exhibitions are impressive. It is well worth a visit.

German Mining Museum

Of course, the German Mining Museum should not be missing from this list. It is not one of the most visited museums in Germany for nothing. You can discover the history of mining in the huge exhibition area and gain an insight into life underground in the visitor mine. In good weather, you have the opportunity to climb the winding tower and look out over Bochum.

You will also find numerous exhibits on the history of photography and film in the museum, with replicas to try out for yourself.

Football museum

The German Football Museum is the destination for football fans. In the museum, you can discover football history, learn more about historic sporting events and see how football has developed over the course of time. All of this is complemented by an exciting cultural and events programme.
