Flo and Tine explain the transport revolution

Status: 22.01.25

Flo and Tine are standing at the bus stop. There are cars and bicycles on the road. People are walking to work, school or other places on the pavements. An e-scooter passes them quickly.

"Have you ever thought about where you'll go when you're allowed to drive?"

Tine shakes her head.

"I'd rather go by bike. Or by train if it's far away."

Flo nods.

"Mum and dad say that you often need a car. And that we need a transport revolution to change that."

Their bus arrives and Flo and Tine get on.

"What is a transport revolution?"

How we will reach our destination in future

"Transport includes all the different ways we get from one place to another. Like the bus we're on right now. But it also includes cars, trains and bicycles. Or simply walking.

My parents say that some ways of getting somewhere are better for the environment than others. For example, most cars run on petrol. They blow gases out of their exhausts, which are bad for the environment and your health. And you also need a lot of cars because only a few people can fit in them. There are also electric cars. They are much quieter and make less of a mess when driving.

Many more people can fit on a bus or train. That's why it's better for the environment. Unfortunately, there aren't enough buses and trains everywhere for people to use them."

The bus stops outside the school that Flo and Tine attend. They get off.

On foot or by bike

"It would be really good if lots of people cycled or walked. But we also need to rebuild our roads to make this possible. We need more cycle paths and good footpaths. And more buses and trams that run everywhere. Then we wouldn't need so much space for cars and could build more playgrounds or something instead."

Tine nods enthusiastically.

"More playgrounds would be great! I hope a lot of things will be rebuilt in the future and we'll all have more space. Then we can go racing on our bikes!"
